Antarctica 2010

Imagine yourself sailing through Antarctic waters. The cool, crisp, clean air, amazing icy landscape and wildlife surround you.  A place that has captured the imagination of many explorers in the past, names like Shackleton, Crean, Scott all answered to the call of Antarctica. It is special, like nowhere else on earth and you are there, joining that special group of people who are fortunate to see Antarctica for themselves.

Would you like to join a trip from Ireland to Antarctica in January 2010?  There are a limited number of places available on a special voyage.

So who can go?
The expedition is suitable for all ages, fitness levels and interests. All you need is a sense of adventure and a desire to see one of the most remarkable locations on the planet. Cabins are available to share so no need for single supplements and extra costs!

The trip will depart from Dublin on 23rd January flying to Buenos Aires.  From there it's on down to Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost city in the world and the embarkation point for our adventure to Antarctica.

Sailing across the Drake Passage, you will cross the Antarctic Convergence.  It is then that things start to change.  Temperatures drop and you start to spot your first icebergs.  You are now entering the unique, pristine and otherworldly location of Antarctica.

We will sail through some amazing landscapes, witnessing Antarctica's wonderful wildlife.

Landing on the continent we will visit colonies of tens of thousands of penguins, watch whales as they feed in the rich waters, see Leopard, Fur, Crabeater, Weddell and Elephant Seals as they bask on the shores and ice floes.  It is then that you fully appreciate how precious and special this place is and you are there witnessing it firsthand.

During the voyage we will also have an opportunity to visit one of Antarctica's Research Stations to see how people live and work in this part of the world.  There may also be the opportunity to visit Port Lockroy, the first British Research Station in Antarctica which was established in 1944.  The voyage will be staffed by experts who will guide and inform us about the wildlife, history and ecology of Antarctica.

And as if that weren't enough, if you are feeling a bit more adventurous you can also camp overnight on the ice!  Everybody can participate, no previous experience required! How many people get to say they camped on Antarctica?

You'll also have the chance to kayak in the waters of Antarctica, a really special opportunity! Basic kayak experience is required.

Every day will bring new and unforgettable experiences as we experience this amazing location.

Returning from Antarctica we will make our way back to Buenos Aires before then making the journey back to Dublin arriving on 7th of February having just had an unforgettable experience.

Day 4 - January 26th

Today is the big day when we board ship to make our way to Antarctica. Boarding will not be until 4pm so there'll be plenty of time to have a look around Ushuaia and maybe pick up and last few items before sailing. After boarding you'll be assigned your cabin and then the adventure begins as we set sail towards the Drake Passage and the Antarctic Peninsula (B,D)

Day 5 & 6 - January 27th - 28th
During these two days we sail across the Drake Passage. When we cross the Antarctic Convergence, we arrive in the circum-Antarctic up welling zone. In this area we may see Wandering Albatrosses, Grey Headed Albatrosses, Black- browed Albatrosses, Light- mantled Sooty Albatrosses, Cape Pigeons, Southern Fulmars, Wilson's Storm Petrels, Blue Petrels and Antarctic Petrels. Near the South Shetland Islands, we glimpse the first icebergs. (B,L,D)

Day 7 - 11 - January 29th - February 2nd
A typical itinerary in the South Shetlands and Antarctic Peninsula could be as follows. This is a sample only, the final itinerary will be determined by the Expedition Leader on board.
We will sail directly to "High Antarctica", passing the Melchior islands and the Schollaert Channel between Brabant and Anvers Island.  On Cuverville Island, a small precipitous island, nestled between the mountains of the Antarctic Peninsula and Danco Island, we will find a large colony of Gentoo Penguins and breeding pairs of Brown Skuas. On Danco Island we can observe Chinstrap Penguins and possibly Weddell and Crabeater Seals. In Neko Harbour we will have the opportunity to set foot on the Antarctic Continent in a magnificent landscape of huge glaciers; other continent landings are for example possible on Portal Point.

During the cruise we will also offer zodiac cruises such as Foyn Harbour on Nansen Island and Neko Harbour.

When sailing to Paradise Bay, with its myriad icebergs and deep cut fjords, we will have the opportunity for zodiac cruising between the icebergs in the inner parts of the fjords. In this area we have good chances to see Humpback Whales and Minke Whales.

After sailing through the Neumayer Channel, we visit the British research station and post office Port Lockroy on Goudier Island. Close to Port Lockroy we can also offer a landing on Jougla Point with Gentoo Penguins and Imperial Shags.

We sail through the spectacular Lemaire Channel to Pleneau and Petermann Island where we can find Adelie Penguins and Blue-eyed Shags. In this area there are good chances to encounter Humpback Whales, Minke Whales and Fin Whales. A visit to one of the scientific stations in Antarctica will give you an insight about the life of modern Antarcticans working on the White Continent.

Further south we may visit the Ukrainian Vernadsky Station, where we will receive a warm welcome from the station crew.

Sailing north through Neumayer Channel we arrive at the Melchior Islands with a very beautiful landscape and again possibilities for zodiac cruising among the icebergs, where we may encounter Leopard Seals, Crabeater Seals and whales. (B,L,D)

Day 12 & 13 - February 3rd - 4th

On the retrun leg in the Drake Passage we again have a chance of seeing many seabirds. (B,L,D)

Day 14 - February 5th

We arrive in the morning in Ushuaia and disembark. Transfer to the airport for our return flight to Buenos Aires. After checking into the hotel you will have the rest of the day and evening to explore the city. (B)

Day 15 - February 6th

Today we make the return flight to Dublin flying overnight. (B)

Day 16 - February 7th

Arrive Dublin Airport having being to the bottom of the world and back. You are now one of the lucky people to have been to Antarctica. All that's left now is to try and describe to family and friends the amazing sights and sounds you have encountered on your voyage to Antarctica.
